A Family Home

A Family Home When Megan and Casey Collins moved into their four-bedroom Minneapolis home four years back, it was dark with obsolete everything. "The challenge was to turn it into a glowing, fresh location without spending a great deal of money on a significant reno," says Megan, a freelance writer, that shares the home with her husband and their children (from left) Liva, 3, Isla, 5, and Mia, seven.

Personal Touches After painting nearly every square inch and shopping for budget-friendly furnishings, she discovered ways to weave in creative tricks at every turn. There's the deed to the home, blown up and framed at the entryway; the high chairs converted into seats for your children at the kitchen table; an inexpensive upholstery movement in the living room.

Living Room Megan purchased the ivory leather sofa in the nearby Room & Board outlet with some trepidation. "With young children, I thought, Uh-oh, this could be a disaster," she states. "I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on it, and it is probably not what leather experts would imply, but it works!"

A Pair of Tables Two identical wood cubes painted steely grey stand in for a coffee table. When friends come over, Megan pushes them together, throws a small tablecloth at the top, and uses them as a miniature buffet for drinks and snacks.

Thrifty Fabric Trick Angled Initial With a piece of leftover fabric (Chiang Mai Dragon from Schumacher), Megan covered just the seat backs of a $50 set of Craigslist chairs my blog. The rest is upholstered in cheap linen. This gold-painted wood C is from an antiques shop. Find similar ones in ballarddesigns.com.

Bowls on a Mantel When Megan seen this collection at a junk shop and realized they matched each of the colours in the room, she put the bowls on display.

Art Hung Low Paintings do not need to be at an adult's eye level Continue Reading go to my blog. Megan often hangs art where her children can appreciate it click over here. It is a lot easier to love when you are seated, too.

Entryway The old flooring was blue laminate. "We couldn't stand it, but we did not budget for a new floor," says Megan. Instead she had the original one painted and sanded in a checkerboard pattern with a protective epoxy finish check these guys out. "It cost about $800, but it would have been tens of thousands to replace it."

Enormous Memento Animal Hooks The previous homeowners gave Megan the original deed for the 1907 home over at this website. She had it blown up to about 20 inches by 40 inches at an art supply store, then framed it. Rather than a coatrack, the family hangs bags and coats on a pair of metal hooks from Anthropologie.

Scripty Rug The wrought iron rug from ballarddesigns.com features a French poem about an ant and a cricket.

Clear Console An acrylic table out of CB2 practically disappears in the corner. The woven bins, from West Elm (green) and shopmille.com (blue), maintain bicycle helmets and dog leashes.

Dining Room To match the entire family for holidays, Megan discovered a wood table Craigslist that could extend to seat 12. She paired it with contemporary white Anziano seats by Donghia (for a similar look, try allmodern.com) and two leather bunch chairs which were available at a local design center.

Straightforward Centerpiece Soft Chairs Megan's trick to get a fairly, durable arrangement: Queen Anne's lace (usually a bouquet filler) in a transparent glass vase. A scrap of fabric is wrapped over the table runner . White cushions from IKEA (roughly $7 each) make the timber side chairs comfier.

A Tree Inside Curvy Pendant The big bay window gives the fiddle leaf fig tree that the bright, indirect sunlight it needs. Megan's sister loved this sculpture-like glass fixture from Artemide so much that she hung the exact same one in her master tub.

Kitchen Even though the kitchen is tight, Megan wanted the family to use it for dishes go to this site find this. "I couldn't find a table that fit the awkward space, so my neighbor, that assembles furniture, made one out of reclaimed barn wood," she states. The countertops are speckled brown/beige granite, and the cabinets, painted White Dove from Benjamin Moore, have knobs from Restoration Hardware.

Right-Height Chairs Rather than giving the kids adult seats that are too low, Megan bought high seats at an antiques store. One had an attached tray, which she eliminated so they could be dragged close to the table.

DIY Drapes The curtains are made from a lightweight 38-inch-by-78-inch Turkish towel (scentsandfeel.com) cut in half, using 1-inch pockets stitched at the top to fit a tension rod.

Playroom The sunny room right off the kitchen is where the children play and watch TV. The TV stand and nearly 8-foot-long sofa are both from the Room & Board outlet, along with the reddish cast aluminum table is from West Elm navigate here. Megan left the bank of windows, which overlooks the backyard, bare to allow as much light as you possibly can.

Magnet Art Wall The wall behind the sofa is coated with magnetic paint (Magic Wall magnetic paint by Kling Magnetics) with a layer of latex paint wikipedia reference. The kids' photos stay put with miniature Mighty Magnets from The Container Store.

Replaceable Carpet The area's Flor carpet squares (Mild Mannered in peacock, flor.com) can be picked up and phased out if they become stained.

Photo Grid Polaroids of the kids taken on their birthdays and half of birthdays work as a crafty development chart.

Girls' Bedroom "My sister and I shared a room growing up, and I desired Mia and Isla to have the identical bonding experience," says Megan. To maintain floor area open in the small area, she had a carpenter build a loft bed with a real staircase instead of a ladder for Mia. Isla's toddler bed fits snugly underneath. The colorful hooked rug is from Dash & Albert, and Megan discovered the look-alike doll bunk bed on Amazon.

Party Decorations Crepe paper flowers left over from a friend's birthday are hung from fishing wire and ceiling hooks.

Hidden Bookcase Adjustable shelves line one side of the stairs up to the top bunk. "Proof that it can be fun to use a really small space!" says Megan.

Guest Bedroom When Casey's family along with other out-of-towners visit, they stay in this guest room painted soft green useful source you could try this out. The queen-size black leather bed with white linens gets some colour with throw cushions from Etsy (Megan's favourite resource for designer fabric cushions on the cheap) plus a coral wool throw by Zuzunaga (kcolette.com for purchasing info).

Cool Hardware The dresser, which Megan spotted sitting outside a thrift store in New York City, was formerly drab green. White paint and new glass knobs from Anthropologie totally turned it all around.

Fuzzy Bedside Rug "I really like the feel of sheepskin on your feet when you first get out of bed," says Megan.

Photo Shelf A framed photograph of Megan and Casey sits to a shell-shaped shelf just below a photograph of Casey's grandparents as a young bunch.
